Brown-Black-Brown, which if memory serves me correctly, is 100 Ohms. I think that resistor lives in the power supply circuit (the three legged beasty next to it is an L7805 5V regulator) so you may well have no 5V rail to power the electronics.

That's reminded me - I used to buy packs of mixed resistors from Maplins but now Maplins have gone I haven't seen mixed packs sold anywhere else. Easy to buy resistors from e.g. RS components but where can I buy a mixed pack from (Gilbert) ?

Ebay is a good bet, if Gillbertd doesn't suggest somewhere better

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333777545735

Amazon also do boxes like these

Thanks Bri, dunno why I didn't find them when I looked on Ebay. Would think RS components sold mixed packs.

update .

soldered in new resistor .no effect , connected switch ..

Image

light up as it should . but no connection .

connected pot across fuel sender wires..

Image

gave it 0- 90 ohms no effect .

tested chip in corner of board , its giving 5v .

all tests done with leo , omvl ,and bigas s/w.

stuck !

for a 0-90 sensor, the install instructions show white and green should be connected to one side (together) of the sensor, and the other side to ground?. Though you should be getting access to the ecu through the software if you've fixed the only fault on the board.

Thought that occurs now - are you seeing 12V on any pin of the diagnostics connector?

The connector where you plug the max 232 wiring into (the red wire I think, which agrees with the diagram you posted before). Just thinking if its not getting 12v there, your not going to get any luck with the comms.

Level sensor wise, the manual shows various combinations of the white and green wires depending on the type of sensor being used, but the general theme is the other side wants to goto ground not back to the ecu. Example attached, if you don't have the manual this comes from can get it to you somehow though I'd guess you have it already?

If you followed the diagram for the interface, the MAX232 chip is powered by the 12V from the Leo, if it isn't getting that, it isn't going to do anything.

thanks chaps ,i will test for it .

Thank you Brian i do have the manual , just forgot it , looks like i put the pot across white wire and earth with my aeb 1050 sensor .

i wonder if i can see if the fx dx wires are putting out a signal , maybe with my oscilloscope ?

Wondering if its there to start with - I'd guess so from the connection starting, but maybe it then drops due to a fault with the ecu that hasn't been found as yet once a load is being picked up by the max232 chip? Wouldn't do any harm to have a meter on there to check just in case?

Might also be an idea to test the FX/DX wires with a meter just in case theres a break on one of them? Testing with a scope would tell you if something is there, but having something known to work for a comparison would be helpful?

I'd read that to be what the manual is saying as well regarding the wiring of the level sensor, though depends what type of sensor is selected in the software as to what the gauge does. It seems there is a option for a low fuel level only sensor (on/off float swtich type thing i'd guess). If thats selected it only lights the bottom led depending on the level in the tank.

update :

12 v and earth there on interface board .

continuity on all fx/dx junctions , and earth , and also 232 serial plug.

white wire to pot and pot to earth gives 4 green leds , irrespective of resistance . assume leo set for diff type of level gauge.

so no faults found so far .

Well looks like the ecu is at least working on some level then, I'd suggest your best bet is to try swapping Gillbertd's spare ecu for yours and see what you get then if the offer is still open. At least that would narrow it down to being your ecu and confirm the lead you have is ok. That would also give you something to compare with on the scope.

The AEB 1050 has something wierd about it (I think, but not sure that it goes the opposite way to a 1090 sensor (lower level on gauge on the 1090 means the voltage drops, lower level on the 1050 gives higher voltage I think?) though looks like your wiring is now correct. Though again, who knows what the ecu is setup to expect, and until you solve the connection problems it doesn't really matter anyway.
