Bit of profiteering I feel.....

#1 Post by Gilbertd » Tue May 21, 2019 5:41 pm

Just got back from one of my fairly regular mega trips across Europe and noted with interest the differing prices for LPG in different countries. France is to be avoided with Autoroute filling stations charging 1 Euro a litre, so fill up in the UK and then wait until Belgium where it's only 0.53 Euro a litre. Germany is a bit dearer at around 0.65 Euro but knowing that it was cheaper in Poland, arranged it so I'd need to fill up again just over the border. Now, Poland doesn't use the Euro but uses the Zloty which is currently around 4.8 Zloty to the Pound. Crossing the border and there's two filling stations each showing LPG at 3.99 Zloty a litre so working out at about 83p. That seemed bloody expensive to me and wondered if there had been a big price hike since last year when it was much cheaper. So I carried on and found the next filling station, at 2.05 Zloty, almost half the price! Everywhere else in Poland was charging much the same, around 2.05 to 2.25 so under 50p a litre wherever I went. Seems the owners of the filling stations next to the border are working on the principle that everyone will expect it to be cheap and won't bother working out the exchange rate, they'll just fill up anyway......

That's good info, I'll pass it on to customers, some are planning on taking their converted vehicles abroad soon.

From the records I kept on my trip
France, avoid filling up if at all possible, between 0.97 and 1.01 Euros a litre on the Autoroutes, a bit cheaper at the supermarkets but still around 0.85.
Belgium, 0.53 Euros just about everywhere
Netherlands, 0.65 Euros
Germany, 0.65 Euros
Poland, 2.05-2.25 Zloty (under 50p)
Lithuania, 0.58 Euros
Latvia, 0.59 - 0.65 Euros

In France the pumps are labelled GPL, in Latvia either Ducos (a brand name like Autogas) or Gaze, everywhere else either LPG or Autogas. Netherlands uses the same bayonet fitting as here, Belgium and Germany use the ACME screw and the rest use the Italian cup so a set of adapters are also needed.

A good European equivalent to our filllpg.co.uk website is this one https://www.mylpg.eu/lpg-prices-across-europe which will allow you to download a POI file either for an individual country or for all of Europe.
