New LPG filling stations app.

#1 Post by LPGC » Thu Jun 10, 2021 9:58 pm

I've been talking (emailing) Mike and LiquidGas recently.
Mike wrote: I would mention that a new website and App is being developed for Autogas motorists, which should be regularly updated with new information. We hope this will help you and your customers find the most convenient refuelling point. For details please see https://www.autogas.app/ or download the app for Android devices in Google Play Store.

Its not really an App as such - its more a mobile webpage that can be viewed on any device as long as its got an internet connection. Or a desktop pc for that matter. All the app does, is gives you a shortcut to the webpage.

The plus side to it over filllpg is that it contains a lot more information like opening hours. And it works reliably, unlike the website. and should work on apple Ios devices for those that have them.

Downside over filllpg is that the data has to be loaded every time you open the page/app

I only got the link this afternoon at a busy time, didn't click on it until this evening then immediately posted it here as I didn't expect to spend as much time online this evening.

Thoughts did occur - I wonder if anyone we know of wrote the app, does the app use any existing database we know of, ...and at some point in future will this app (web page) 'spam' uses with partial truth but not the whole truth pro trade body type messages. If the intent is good/unbiased and it doesn't turn into an advertising medium, then considering it seems to look good and work/scroll well I welcome it.

Raises a couple of questions though - If it is new (I wasn't aware of this before - how long has it existed?) where did it get the original data, and how well (by whom if at all) has it been updated since then?

A new resource would be even better if it featured journey planning considering refills enroute.

That map is identical to the mylpg.eu map but it isn't completely correct. It shows the Morrisons at St Ives (cambs, not Cornwall) twice......

It's possible to submit updated info, but its moderated so any edits have to be approved before they appear. Its been round for at least a year now. I discovered it by chance in the play store.

Yes it has a few errors I've noticed, and it seems the data has been taken from somewhere and put into it. Some of it seems to have been done by addresses rather than looking at map pointer locations.

Better off sticking with existing websites / apps then?

Not really, In some ways it would make more sense to use both anyway.

If people correct errors of course, the info gets more accurate as well. It seems now when you find an error that it gets fixed if you send an edited submission of it.

As I did with the St Ives one last night and now its been fixed. Maybe Richard did the same as well

Mylpg.eu seems populated with a lot of nonsense info - duplicate stations, stations in wrong places, random deletions etc. Filllpg suffers from some random deletions as well as I've seen 2 of the 3 local stations get deleted when they do actually still exist.

The problem I suspect is when someone goes to a station and they are out of gas, rather than reporting it as temporarily out, they assume it has stopped doing it so delete it. I went to fill up earlier today and found Flogas are out but a Flogas supplied filling station a couple of miles away still have supplies. There's a huge number that are currently out due to the supply problems though.

Reads like some of these websites would be better if users could click on a station and see a list of user updates, and stations not deleted from the map for (say) 2 months after a user has reported the place has stopped selling gas. It's good that websites are user updateable but that also makes them susceptible to spurious updates/deletions.

It would be yes, thats probabbly the best point about the fillpg app - you can see whats been done from the log, or the front page of the site. Its not perfect, but then none of the others are either. Hence using a combination of two tends to help (gives you the opening hours as well that way)
