LPG gauge doesn't work.

LPG gauge doesn't work.
I've just had a new AEB/King front end fitted to my Grand Cherokee, and the LPG guage doesn't work (it never has). All 4 green lights right up until I run out of gas! I know these gauges are known for being inaccurate, but even and indication of when I was on half a tank would be nice!
Not being an LPG bod, I don't know exactly what I need and how to go about fitting it - the kit fitted was this - http://www.tinleytech.co.uk/acatalog/Ki ... _Only.html
An I have the underfloor "combo" type of tank, like this - http://www.tinleytech.co.uk/acatalog/Jeep.html (zj/zg type).
Can anyone point me in the direction of what I need, and how to fit it - for instance does the tank need lowered to fit it? Or need to be empty and vented out?

Re: LPG gauge doesn't work.
There are different types of senders, and your system might just be set to the wrong one in the software?
Re: LPG gauge doesn't work.
Take it back to whoever fitted the new system. It either needs wiring correctly or setting in the software.

Re: LPG gauge doesn't work.
He only fitted a front end kit, I didn't ask him to mess with the level gauge - do the senders go faulty often? I can twiddle with the software as have all the settings backed up, and a lead on the way. It does happily bleep away at me when I run out of gas and it switches to petrol, so must be seeing something? Hopefully? Otherwise if I have to drop the tank there are about a million bolts with big flat square washers holding the whole lot in... whereabouts would the sender gubbins normally sit on an underfloor cylindrical tank like that, or does it depend on the system? Somewhere accessible without either dropping the tanks on my head, nor having to vent the tank (I've just filled up!)
Cheers,
Patrick.

Re: LPG gauge doesn't work.
Oh, if it makes any difference, the front end kit used to be a badly bodged Ag Autogas SGI kit fitted around 2002 - not sure if these required a different impedance sender, or if the wiring at the tank is bolloxed, or the sender in the tank has taken a shit?
Re: LPG gauge doesn't work.
Beeping could be just its detecting low pressure at the rail. The level sensor is just a sensor in the tank - if you have a new front end kit including the ecu then the gauge will need to be specified in the new ecu.
The sender would be somewhere located on the multivalve - you might be able to access it depending on the mounting or maybe not. If you can see anything under there then a photo may help to determine this?
Have a look when your lead arrives what its set to firstly - Also it might be worth speaking to whoever did the swap over as they may be able to either tell you what one it is or sort it for you.
It would seem sensible to run the tank to empty before trying to drop it, it will only be heavier otherwise.
One of my two converted vehicles has never shown a helpful level on the gauge it shows full till theres only 50 miles left in the tank and then drops fairly randomly to anywhere between full and empty, usually ending up at 1 light only. i just use the trip counter to keep track of how far since last fillup.

Re: LPG gauge doesn't work.
Could be the sender has died - if you can find it check the resistance across it that may give a clue as to the type of sensor if you know roughly how much is in the tank at the time. Bearing in mind that would now be 12 years old if its the original tank/sensor then theres a reasonable chance the sensor has given up.camaro wrote:Oh, if it makes any difference, the front end kit used to be a badly bodged Ag Autogas SGI kit fitted around 2002 - not sure if these required a different impedance sender, or if the wiring at the tank is bolloxed, or the sender in the tank has taken a shit?
Has it ever worked?
Re: LPG gauge doesn't work.
If your tank is 12 years old I would think about changing it as it's well past it's sell by date.
Did it work ok before you changed the front end? If so it's probably set to the wrong sender in the software or it's been connected wrong.

Re: LPG gauge doesn't work.
The gauge never worked - even the old one always showed full until it was empty and switched to petrol! I think the tank may have been changed at some point - despite being under the car, it's rust free and if I scrape off a little of the Waxoyl (whole Jeep has been done) with a sharp edge, the paint seems perfect. The petrol tank is the same, great condition. I'll have to check things out in the software once the lead arrives, maybe it'll give you all a better idea of what is going on?
Re: LPG gauge doesn't work.
If you can get to the multivalve on the tank, then you should see a little gauge on that. Assuming there is, there should be wires coming from it that need to be connected to the controller. If the tank has been changed, then I would expect it to have a gauge fitted, an older multivalve may not have had one.

Re: LPG gauge doesn't work.
Great stuff, thanks! I'll have a look once I get a chance to hook it up, and also get a look under it!
